LITERARY CIRCLES
Each group will have four or
five members. Each group has chosen a book to read. The books will be
divided into four equal sections, and group members will read one
section each week. Once a week the groups will meet during class time
to discuss their book. There are four (or five) tasks group members
will complete each week, and the tasks will rotate around the circle so
that each week students will have a different task to perform.
When the book is finished each student will pass in a short summary of
the book- one page typed, or two written.
TASKS:
1. Discussion Director- This
student will prepare three discussion questions, one from the
beginning, middle and end of the assigned section of the book. The
discussion director will lead the discussion, making sure everyone in
the group responds.
2. Vocabulary Enricher- This
student will choose 10 words form the assigned section that he/she is
not familiar with, will look up their definitions and explain them to
the rest of the group.
3. Literary Luminary- This
student will choose one section or scene from the assigned reading
which can be described as either "happy", "sad", "scary", "funny' etc.
The student will read this section aloud and ask whether others agree
with their description and why.
4. Connector- This student
will connect part of the story with their own life, a movie or other
book, or something in the world. They will give specific examples, and
share them with the group.
5.(if necessary) Illustrator- The
illustrator will draw or create as in a collage some scene or person in
the section read.
